In this revised edition of what could be regarded as the standard reference work on later Clyde Steamer history, the author has rewritten the previous edition and added more new material relating to more recent changes. The title of the book contains the word 'steamers' as most of the Clyde Vessels were of this description when the first edition was written, however readers should note that it is used in its widest sense and is intended to include 'motor vessel' as well, there now being more units of the latter category in the Clyde and loch fleets than of steam-propelled vessels.
The scope of the book is on the following lines. Firstly the formerly railway-owned Clyde river steamers, and those on Loch Lornond, are described, the history of each fleet being traced.
Passing reference to other Scottish vessels owned by the railway companies is also made, so that the development of their fleets can be seen. Following on from this the remaining Clyde fleets and various privately-owned fleets along with Loch and Canal steamers, are described right up to the present day.
This book was the second of a series by the authors and this fourth edition contains 65 black and white illustrations and 55 coloured, some of the former and all the latter being included as new in this edition.
"There are 211 pages of text, and 101 of fleet lists, and a total of 120 photographic illustrations, many of great interest and rarity." - Nautical Magazine.
