This handbook is entirely basic in its treatment of the wide involvement of taking boats and yachts away from the shore and out into open sea conditions. Its intention is not to confuse the reader with the broad facets of professionalism associated with seamanship and navigation although both condition thinking in "Knowing your boat and what it can be expected to do".

None the less, its contents within 102 pages cover boat forms and their influence upon safe handling; sail types and their correct usage; wind and weather and the associated meteorological influences; the language of the sea and its interpretation in meeting all the exigencies of maritime behaviour.
