Lady of Avenel had a more interesting career, starting life in 1874 as a rakish topsail schooner which was often thought, in error, to have been built as a slaver, she usually traded between Dartmouth and Spain or the Azores.  Her schooner rig was too lofty so she was re-rigged as a brigantine, and later went into the coasting trade.

In 1920 she became a training ship in Falmouth, where she remained until replaced by the Cutty Sark in 1923.  She was then re-named Island and took an expedition to the Arctic Circle under Commander F.H. Worsley.  On return her name became Virgo while in 1933 she was converted into a yacht and had her original name restored.  The conversion was carried out without altering her external trader-like appearance.

She was finally destroyed by vandals during World War II.
